In the 80s, Gary had a solo exhibition of large scale paintings at the Surfdale Post Office. pertaining to Tongan iconicities eg. turtles, etc., together with an involvement with the Matapana Festive, Waiheke Is.Gary attended the first Faggots’ Gathering on the outskirts of Nelson in the early 80s, and, under the auspicious of Lawson Bracewell. As a psychotherapist, Gary worked at the Auckland Sexual Health Clinic with transgender people, and has been remembered by a participant, Greg, for his rebirthing skills in relation to the ending of a relationship. Above, and beyond all else, Gary is cherished by myself for his consciousness around power and control, and his capacity to respect his abusers by offerring a form of restorative justice, in that he requested of a Catholic brother come talkback host and group facilitator to ‘come out’ and honour himself as an homosexual male -what a resepectfull resolve, and, thereby, step out from behind a secrecy, and re-find his gay male school friend from a place of greater health and wellbeing. My sexual orientation, gender and trauma are an integral part of my artistry and person with a somatic core essence cum intelligence as a baby and an intergenerational Two-Spirit like ancestry, less known, but not forgotten!
Exhibit Background
This installation painting will be inherently related to my being an homosexual+ male, the content of psychotherapeutic content in relation to abuse from 3+ years of age through to 74 years of age, when I experienced burnout of more than a couple of weeks while still working 2 days per week, wherein I started EMDR+ trauma counselling/Steve de Quincey, https://qvtp.nz, in July ’23, for reasons of maternal sexual interactions cum sexualised questions, physical discipline/abuse and culminating in a Stockholm-like compromised Self, lesser agency and autonomy, while it became evident that my father was a practised cross dresser before getting married.

Te Whare Taonga o Waiheke/Waiheke Community Art Gallery, Members Exhibition
The theme for this exhibition is “Te Motu”. The male forms are derived from “Robert Mapplethorpe”, untitled p. 105; Freeman; Caperone.
In this instance the content may refer to aspects of my sensuosity cum sexuosity, and, my therapeutic process from unconscious content through to consciousness -a re-configuring of a sense of Self/myself, agency and autonomy.
Visual Arts Education
Artistically, I completed NZCEA Years 11 and 12 at Waiheke High School in 2016/17, attended a Max Gimblett Sumi ink workshop, together with various Clive Humphreys workshops/https://www.clivehumphreys.com.
I am primarily drawn to the less conscious practice of abstracting the male human body, pertaining to the culture of all males from a religio-colonisation viewpoint, as it is shaped by misogyny/sexism, heterosexism, homophobia etc.
I give greater credence to the less rational cum conscious part of the brain, and, delight in looking for mirage within the formation of the paint eg. the whenua of Waiheke was personified to ‘see’ a water fowl and a sailor!

I am now considering the term non-binary as it pertains to contexts eg. somatic communication, sexual intimacy, dancing etc.
Vaginal, oral and anal sexual intimacy are all centres of pleasure. It just so happens that one part of the human body has been ‘colonised’ as normal (normalised) (ie. a quasi-genetically pre-determined function, cleaner, less animalistic etc.) while the other is deemed unnatural because some heterosexual members of a given population hold on to a paradigm and a subsequent myth-making that says that sex is for procreation. Please do your own ‘bedroom research’ and self-publish your data, the conclusions of current research are incorrect!

Let’s talk about (biological) sex. We put people in boxes based on their genitalia, says intersex activist Emily Quinn, as if what’s between somebody’s legs tells you anything about that person — their kindness, generosity, humor. As an intersex individual who was born with both a vagina and and testicles, Quinn has been told since she was a child (and still as an adult) that her biology puts her at risk — despite the fact that a surgery to remove her genitals would most likely do more physical and emotional harm than good. Quinn asks: What constitutes a man, a woman? Does lacking or having certain organs disqualify a person from being who they are? Much like gender, biological sex exists on a spectrum and shouldn’t be boiled down to just male and female, she suggests. There are so many other human traits that have more than two options — think: hair color, eye colour, complexion, height, even noses. Globally, intersex people aren’t rare or new; they’ve existed throughout every culture in history and represent about 2 percent of the global population — the same percentage as genetic redheads.
